About the Farm
Background
Founded in 2014 by millennial first-generation farmers who met through the international WWOOF network, Unadilla Community Farm is situated on 12 acres of field and forest in West Edmeston, New York. The farm became incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 2020 and is known for donating 100% of its produce to food pantries, mutual aid groups, and herbal clinics. The farm's mission is to provide education and training in sustainable agriculture, natural building, and food equity, particularly for low-income and low-access communities.
Practices
Unadilla Community Farm employs a range of innovative, climate-resilient practices to regenerate land previously used for conventional monocropping. These practices include rainwater collection, multi-story and alley cropping, no-till management, wildlife habitat planting, heavy mulching, on-site composting, crop rotation, and the use of high tunnels. The farm is a member of USDA's Conservation Stewardship Program and New York State's Climate Resilient Farming Program. The transformation of an abandoned cornfield into an edible food forest exemplifies their commitment to sustainable agriculture.
The Rest
Unadilla Community Farm runs various education programs that teach skills related to no-till organic farming, regenerative agroforestry, permaculture design, natural building, foraging, herbalism, and plant-based cooking. They offer a seasonal paid Fellowship and a Volunteer Program, with participants able to count their hours towards experiential course credits, community service, and volunteer paid time off for corporate employees. The farm's unique model of donating all produce is supported through donations and grants.
