About the Farm
Background
Located in a suburban neighborhood from the early 1950s, the Urban Acre Homestead takes full advantage of a recent zoning code addition that permits 'market gardens' without special permits. The farm includes the owner's house and an expansive front and back yard, all incorporated into the farming operation. The owner, Genevieve, brings seven years of experience working on small, organic farms to this venture, applying many of the same practices despite not being certified organic.
Practices
The farm employs low tillage, rainwater harvesting, and drip irrigation to maintain soil health and conserve water. Native plantings are used to support local biodiversity, and strict food safety protocols are followed. Biodynamic practices and integrated pest management strategies are also incorporated. The farm participates in local programs such as the No Pesticide pledge, the Backyard Habitat Program, and the Multnomah Master Gardener Training Program.
The Rest
The farm is not open for tours or visitors due to its location in a residential neighborhood, but Genevieve is available at local farmers markets and for wholesale inquiries. The vision for the Urban Acre includes a diverse food forest with orchard fruits, nuts, berries, perennial vegetables, and a fledgling tea plantation. Ducks are raised for eggs, and a variety of annual vegetables are grown for market. Genevieve encourages close relationships with local farmers and is always happy to discuss her growing practices and inputs.
