About

Background

Dan Gregg, founder of Grelen Nursery, Inc., left banking in 1990 to start the nursery on a corner of his grandparent’s cattle farm in Orange County. As demand grew, he partnered with Zeke Galvin in 1997 to manage landscaping. In 2003, they expanded to a 200-acre farm in Somerset, Virginia, eventually growing to 600 acres. Known for high-quality products and services, the nursery evolved into a destination garden market and pick-your-own experience, opening The Market at Grelen in April 2013. Over time, they added a cafe, event venues, and a public trail system.

Practices

The nursery grows hundreds of types of trees, shrubs, and plants, offering a full range of landscaping, hardscaping, and tree care services. They emphasize high-quality products and have developed a large vegetable garden to complement their berries and fruit trees. The interconnectedness of the farm's practices is evident in their farm-to-table cafe menu, which features produce grown on-site.

Of note

The Market at Grelen includes a European-style garden shop, a cafe serving Virginia beer, cider, and wine, and a 6-mile public trail system connecting to James Madison's Montpelier trails. They offer pick-your-own orchards, cut-your-own Christmas tree fields, and various event venues, including Boxwood Villa, Spotswood Lodge, and The Depot, each providing unique lodging and event options.
