Proffitt Family Cattle Co
About
Located in the foothills of North Carolina, just 35 miles west of Charlotte, Proffitt Family Cattle Co. has been serving the Charlotte area and Cleveland County since 2009. Known for their rich, umami-flavored beef, they have sold their products at farmers markets, their farm store, cooking classes, restaurants, and grocers such as Whole Foods. The farm is a local source for USDA Certified Organic, 100% grass-fed beef, and has been certified by ICS since 2009.
Proffitt Family Cattle Co. practices a low-stress style of cattle management, allowing their animals to forage exclusively on pasture 365 days a year. The cattle are raised without hormones, antibiotics, chemical fly sprays, or dewormers. The farm relies on rain and sunshine to sustain the cows and pasture land, and uses only organic inputs like homemade hay, salt, and trace minerals. The cattle are moved from pasture to pasture every 1 to 3 days, ensuring they always have access to fresh grass. The pastures receive occasional lime or chicken litter, but no chemical inputs.
The farm holds a North Carolina meat handler's license and uses Mays Meats, a USDA approved and licensed processor, to ensure the beef is processed as sterile as possible. All beef is hung for 14 days to assure tenderness and then vacuum sealed in individual packs. Proffitt Family Cattle Co. sells their frozen product by the cut and by the pound or in bulk one weekend per month at the Charlotte Regional Farmers Market and from the farm by appointment. Visitors are welcome to stop by the farm to check out their operations.
