About the Farm
Background
Mid Mitten Sustainable Farm LLC has established itself as a pioneer in using advanced farming practices to create a harmonious local food ecosystem. Known for managing traditional livestock in cooperation with nature, the farm has become a model for integrating animals and land management to produce high-quality meats and other products.
Practices
The farm employs adaptive multi-paddock grazing to grow excellent meats on pasture while restoring soil fertility. Trees are planted in pastures to create a savanna that provides fruits and nuts for pigs and chickens, and grass for cows and sheep. Pigs are raised on pasture and finished on lush spring grass or acorns, walnuts, and hickory nuts in the fall. Cattle and sheep are 100% grass-fed, with sheep replacing cattle in tighter spaces. Egg-laying chickens follow the sheep and cows to maintain healthy herds. The farm avoids synthetic chemicals, fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, and chemical dewormers. Animals are fed natural diets: grass and local hay for cattle and sheep, and pasture and non-GMO Certified Organic grain for pigs and chickens. The farm does not till and does not own a tractor, focusing instead on building soil health and minimizing nonrenewable energy inputs.
The Rest
The farm's philosophy centers on sustainable farming that builds soil, keeps water and air clean, and produces safe, nutritious food. Every operational decision is guided by these core values, with a commitment to extending the grazing season and growing fruits and nuts to replace annual grains in animal feeds.
