About the Farm

Background

Hybridoma Organic Fruit Farm, located in the Long Green Valley area of Baltimore County, Maryland, began its journey in 1995 when R.G. Hamilton experimented with various crops to determine the best fit for the farm. Initially considering evergreens and redbud trees, the farm eventually focused on blueberries, drawing from Hamilton's Michigan roots. By 2011, the farm had constructed a new berry shed and welcomed the public for a full season of 'pick your own' berries, with 2400 pounds of blueberries picked that year. The farm's name, inspired by an immunology laboratory procedure, reflects Hamilton's dual passions for farming and immunology, which have funded the farm's growth.

Practices

Hybridoma is dedicated to faithful stewardship of its farmland, emphasizing biodiversity, sustainability, and natural fertilization and pest control. The farm is Certified Organic by the Maryland Department of Agriculture and has been placed into an agricultural easement with the Maryland Environmental Trust to protect it from future development. A riparian buffer project established in 2013, in collaboration with the State of Maryland Forestry Service, involves planting approximately 500 fruit and nut trees along the stream to reduce soil erosion. Additionally, a 40 kilowatt per hour solar voltaic system has been installed, making the farm self-sustaining with regard to its electricity use.

The Rest

The farm offers a variety of experiences for visitors, including a spice-herb and lavender garden for children, a swing and slide playground area, and the opportunity to purchase highbush blueberry and lavender plants. Patrons are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes and sun protection when visiting. The farm staff provides guidance on the best picking areas, and visitors are advised to pick only the darkest and mature berries. The farm's educational mission includes sharing knowledge about organic fruit production techniques.
