Garden of Eve
About
Founded in 2001 by Chris and Eve Kaplan-Walbrecht, Garden of Eve began as a small garden on 1/4 acre in Riverhead, Long Island. The couple, both environmental advocates, expanded their operation after selling extra produce at a local farmers market. Today, the farm spans 50 acres, growing certified organic vegetables and flowers, and raising 1000 pastured laying hens. They sell their produce through an on-farm market, farmers markets, and a CSA program serving nearly 1,000 households across New York City and Long Island.
Garden of Eve employs a variety of sustainable farming practices, avoiding the use of poisonous pesticides and herbicides. Instead, they rely on plants' natural defense systems and ecological solutions to manage pests. The farm grows 70 varieties of vegetables, 20 varieties of herbs, and 30 varieties of flowers, emphasizing biodiversity over monocropping. This approach not only supports healthier ecosystems but also results in produce with more intense, sweeter flavors.
The farm operates a Farm Market & Garden Center from April 1 to Thanksgiving and participates in multiple farmers markets. They also offer consulting services through Kaplan Environmental Consulting to help others improve the sustainability and profitability of their agricultural operations. The farm's CSA program has numerous locations across New York City and Long Island, making it accessible to a wide range of customers.
