About

Background

Dunham Cattle Farms has been raising beef cattle in Talladega County since 1994, addressing a growing demand for locally raised beef in the Birmingham area.

Practices

The farm raises cattle on 160 acres of pasture year-round, supplementing their diet with hay and grains when necessary. The cattle are free from feed antibiotics, steroids, or growth hormones. The brood stock consists of around 60 Black Angus and Simmental Angus crosses, many of which are born and raised on the property. Calves are kept until they reach around 700 lbs, then given a grain ration daily for 60-120 days while still on natural forage. The farm uses a USDA Federally inspected slaughterhouse in central Tennessee, where the beef dry ages for approximately 21 days.

Of note

The farm recommends dry aging beef for up to 30 days for steers that are at least 1200 lbs. This is the only time the cattle are not in the farm's care, ensuring a high level of oversight and quality control.
