About the Farm

Background

Ballyhoo Farm began as a small vegetable and egg CSA, evolving from a need for calm companionship for a half-blind Thoroughbred mare, which led to the first four Shetland ewes. Over time, the farm transitioned away from market vegetables and horse training to focus on fiber arts. Today, the flock includes roughly 60 head of award-winning Gotlands and Shetlands, with a few Icelandics and Finnsheep. In 2016, the farm moved to its current location in Shelby County, Kentucky, and continues to expand.

Practices

The farm is dedicated to raising heritage breeds, believing that tradition, history, and conservation matter. They emphasize best practices by prioritizing the well-being of each individual animal, sometimes at the expense of their own comfort or budget. Their commitment to creating a whole farm ecology benefits the people and animals living there, promotes local wildlife, and results in healthy land and products. Daily practices align with a philosophy of authenticity and transparency, ensuring that every item is raised, grown, and made with integrity, dignity, and love.

The Rest

In addition to wool products, the farm sells chicken and duck eggs, occasional goose eggs, seasonal produce, and grassfed lamb. Madeline hosts the Ballyhoo Fiber Emporium podcast and teaches workshops in marketing, fiber production, and more. The farm offers consultations, workshops, speaking services, and beginning shepherd education. Their products have a story, and each purchase begins the next chapter.
