About the Farm
Background
Although five generations of the family have lived on the farm, the current owner is the first to raise Bison. The fascination with Bison began at a friend's wedding, leading to extensive research and preparation. In 1999, the first six Bison were purchased, and by 2001, a farm store was opened to sell home-grown meats. The herd now averages around fifty head, and the farm also participates in local farmers markets.
Practices
The farm never uses hormones, antibiotics, or commercial cattle feed. Herbicides and pesticides are avoided on pastures. The farm is divided into eight pastures, and most of the grass hay is made on rented local farmland or bought from known local farmers. Bison are fed hay, which is dried grass, especially important for winter feeding. Green-chop, fresh grass harvested and transported to the Bison, is used when pasture is insufficient. The breeding program is entirely natural, without artificial insemination or cloning.
The Rest
Bison are native to North America and possess natural immunity and disease resistance, eliminating the need for vaccinations common in beef and dairy cattle. They are well-adapted to extreme weather and do not require shelters. The meat is USDA inspected, even though it is not required by federal law, ensuring high quality. The farm's Bison meat is known for being lean yet juicy, slightly sweeter than beef, and does not shrink during cooking.
