About the Market

Background

Medicine Root Farmer's Market is the first locally Lakota owned farmers market on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. It is also the first market in the area to accept SNAP benefits, making fresh produce more accessible to the community.

Practices

The vegetables are locally grown without the use of pesticides, ensuring that all produce is natural and healthy. Families can engage in hands-on gardening through a 16-week gardening course and a 7-week outdoor course, learning about seasonal entrepreneurship and sustainable farming practices.

The Rest

Visitors can pick their own vegetables daily or visit the farmers market held on Fridays and Saturdays from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Post Office Parking lot in Kyle, South Dakota. The market plans to expand into CSA's and the Senior Farmer's Market Program in the future.
