About the Market

Background

Harvest Home Farmers Markets has been in operation since 1992, becoming the second fresh air market to open in the Bronx twelve years ago. Founded by Maritza Wellington-Owens, the organization has developed and maintained farmers markets in the South Bronx, challenging the belief that low-income communities could not support such markets. Over the years, the markets have become a diverse, loyal, and strong outlet for farm and consumer products comparable to other locations in New York City.

Practices

Harvest Home Farmers Markets work with local vendors to sell their products, providing seasonal employment opportunities to local residents and strengthening neighborhoods by creating community meeting places and increasing pedestrian traffic in business districts. The markets are approved to redeem New York State Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) checks and accept EBT, ensuring access to fresh produce for participants in programs like WIC and Senior Citizens Meals Programs.

The Rest

In response to the growing incidence of diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and obesity in the Bronx, Harvest Home collaborates with local health care agencies to provide nutrition education at the markets, encouraging residents to eat healthier and increase their intake of nutrient and fiber-rich fruits and vegetables. The markets operate multiple sites each week from Wednesday to Sunday, from July to November.
