About the Farm
Background
The Kilgus family has farmed the same land in central Illinois for decades, beginning their journey as dairy farmers in the 1950s. Founded by Duane and Arlene Kilgus in 1958, the farm was originally purchased from Duane’s father, Herman Kilgus. Over the years, the farm evolved from milking Holstein cows to raising Jersey cows, goats, steers, and hogs. The farm has grown into a multi-generational family business, with four families working together to produce, market, and distribute their dairy and meat products.
Practices
The Kilgus Farmstead employs seasonal rotational grazing, converting over 50 acres of former corn and soybean fields into 17 grazing paddocks planted with rye, orchard grasses, and clover. This method supports the health and well-being of their Jersey cows, which are well-suited to the grazing life. The farm also emphasizes responsible stewardship of the land and respectful care for their animals, ensuring high-quality milk and meat products.
The Rest
Visitors are welcome to explore the on-farm creamery and Country Store, or book a tour to learn more about the farm's practices and products. The farmstead offers a variety of wholesome products, including non-homogenized Jersey milk, Jersey beef, Berkshire pork, and Boer goat meat. The Kilgus family is dedicated to preserving their farming tradition and serving local Illinois markets.
