About the Farm
Background
Flying Plow Farm began in 2010 with 3 acres, a shoe-string budget, and the dedication of Sarah and Tom. After renting land for four seasons, they purchased and moved to a 56-acre farm in Rising Sun, MD, in the fall of 2013. Known for producing certified organic vegetables on 15 acres of hilltop soil, the farm also raises Cheviot sheep, Belgian and Suffolk Punch work horses, and certified organic hens and broiler chickens. The farm's mission is to provide healthy, fresh, organic food to the Mid-Atlantic region.
Practices
The farm employs bio-extensive practices, dedicating 12 acres to vegetable production and the rest to pasture and hay for livestock. Six acres of cover crops are grown alongside six acres of vegetables, ensuring soil replenishment and preparation for future seasons. Cover crops are used to improve soil organic matter, carbon content, flora, structure, and tilth, and are also utilized as forage for laying hens and broiler chickens. The farm's livestock, including draft horses, cattle, and pigs, contribute to fieldwork, mowing, composting, and fertility generation. The cattle are 100% grass-fed and grass-finished, and all livestock are fed certified organic feed. The farm avoids synthetic chemicals, focusing instead on compost, cover crops, and timely tillage to maintain soil health.
The Rest
Flying Plow Farm operates a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, providing members with a variety of vegetables from May through November, with options to add egg or chicken shares. The farm attends multiple farmers markets in Maryland and Pennsylvania, and offers online orders of vegetables, chicken, and eggs. The farm stand is open year-round, and home delivery is available. The farm also seeks passionate and motivated crew members for various positions, emphasizing a strong work ethic and physical resilience.
