About the Farm
Background
Established in 1976, Yolo Land & Cattle Co. was the vision of Henry H. Stone and his wife Suzanne. Initially operating on various ranches across California and Nevada, Henry acquired sole interest in 1983 and focused on Black Angus & Hereford crossbreeds. The farm has been raising beef cattle for over 35 years, with a significant shift to direct marketing of grass-fed beef in the past 15 years. The farm has received accolades such as the 'National Environmental Stewardship Award' in 2007. Henry's legacy continues through his sons Scott and Casey, who manage different aspects of the operation, along with their families.
Practices
The farm adheres to a philosophy of 'take care of the land and the land will take care of you.' In 2005, 7,000 acres were placed in a Conservation Easement to ensure the land remains a working cattle ranch. The cattle are rotationally grazed on 7,500 acres of native grasses and clovers from November to May/June, then moved to irrigated pastures for the summer. The farm never uses hormones, antibiotics, or feed additives, and all cattle are raised to full maturity, allowing for natural marbling in the meat. The handling facilities are designed based on Temple Grandin's principles to minimize stress on the animals.
The Rest
The farm offers beef by the quarter side, vacuum-sealed and flash-frozen for freshness, with pickups by appointment only. Visitors are encouraged to bring their children to meet the farm animals. The farm also provides information on their website about grass-fed beef, jerky products, weddings, and agricultural tours.
