About the Farm
Background
Founded in 2003, the Women's Environmental Institute (WEI) began with a mission to be a place for women and allies to renew, learn, and organize for environmental justice. Over the years, it has grown into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and Chisago County charity, known for its environmental research, renewal, and retreat center. WEI operates the Amador Hill Farm and Orchard, a 60-acre certified organic education and demonstration farm.
Practices
As a MOSA Certified Organic Farm, WEI adheres to rigorous third-party verification processes to ensure no use of petrochemical insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or GMO/treated seeds. The farm focuses on sustainable, regenerative agricultural practices, offering hands-on education in organic farming, foraging, herbalism, nutrition, food preservation, aquaponics, and beekeeping. The interconnectedness of farming practices, ecology, and human health is at the core of their philosophy.
The Rest
WEI provides a variety of programs including the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), Veggie Rx, the North Circle Online Farmers Market, the Mill City Farmers Market, and volunteer and workshare opportunities. The farm also hosts an Eco-Retreat Center and FarmStay Program, allowing visitors to stay overnight and engage with the land. WEI's environmental justice initiatives include collaborations with local organizations to promote urban farming and community hubs. The farm offers a diverse array of over 100 different varieties of produce throughout the growing season.
