About the Farm

Background

Situated on a ridge top about 10 miles outside of La Crescent, MN, the farm began its journey by converting row cropped strips to pasture even before moving onto the land. The terrain, characterized by bluff-country hills, is ideal for grazing and unsuitable for other forms of agriculture. The farm's initial spring saw the introduction of a small flock of bottle lambs, which has since grown to 27 ewes, each with its own name and personality.

Practices

The farm operates organically, emphasizing sustainability in both pantry and pasture. Preventative care is a cornerstone of their animal husbandry, avoiding the use of chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Rotational grazing is rigorously practiced, benefiting not only the sheep but also encouraging grassland birds, building soil, and preserving open spaces. The flock is fed grass, farm-produced hay, kelp, and minerals, ensuring a tranquil and healthy environment for the animals.

The Rest

The farm offers lamb in halves and wholes, tanned sheepskins, raw and spun wool, and roving. They collaborate with a nearby on-farm woolen mill to produce a variety of natural-colored yarns and roving from Shetland blend wool, and are introducing Clun Forest wool into their products. Their lamb meat is noted for its tenderness and flavor, and the sheepskins are tanned without bleaching, making them washable.
