About the Farm
Background
In 1865-1867, the Winter family voyaged from Germany to settle in the Ione Valley of California. The land has remained in the family for over 140 years, with one portion known as Winterport Farm. Purchased in 1905, the farm has served various purposes including a dairy, melon and vegetable farm, community pumpkin patch, choose and cut Christmas tree farm, and most recently, a cattle ranch. After World War II, Susan's father, George, operated a 60 cow dairy until the 1970s when he transitioned to raising beef calves. Dan and Susan Port moved back to the farm, restored an 1875 farmhouse, and committed to farming full-time in 1978. They sold produce at local markets and engaged the community with educational field trips. In 2008, they sold a conservation easement to preserve the farm forever.
Practices
Winterport Farm focuses on producing natural and grass-fed beef, emphasizing sustainable agricultural practices. The farm's commitment to preserving the land is evident through their sale of a conservation easement to the Sacramento Valley Conservancy, ensuring the land remains dedicated to agriculture. Dan Port's involvement with the Community Alliance with Family Farmers and the Amador Resource Conservation District highlights their dedication to promoting responsible farming practices.
