About the Farm
Background
Located in the Santa Ynez River valley, Winfield Farm has been in operation since 2003, initially serving local restaurants and the community with a variety of produce. Owned and operated by Bruce and Diane Steele, the farm transitioned from growing vegetables to raising heritage Mangalitsa pigs in 2013. By 2015, the focus shifted entirely to producing USDA certified Mangalitsa pork, known for its tender texture and high-fat content.
Practices
Winfield Farm raises Mangalitsa pigs naturally on pasture, feeding them barley and organically grown pumpkins and squash, much of which is grown on the farm. The pigs are finished on acorns, walnuts, and almonds when available. The farm operates entirely on solar energy and human power, with Bruce Steele personally tending to the pigs. The pigs are treated with utmost respect and care from birth to harvest, and their diet excludes antibiotics, GMOs, corn, and soybeans. The farm's practices ensure compliance with CA Prop 12 standards.
The Rest
Winfield Farm offers custom processed Mangalitsa products through their online Mangalitsa Market, catering to chefs and discerning connoisseurs. The farm's Mangalitsa pork is gaining popularity as the 'Kobe beef' of pork, prized for its robust flavor and ruby-red meat. Visitors can learn more about these special wooly pigs on the farm's website or by contacting them directly.
