About the Farm

Background

The farm is home to a cherished collection of heritage breed livestock, including sheep, hogs, turkeys, chickens, and goats. These breeds represent a rare bit of genetic diversity in an ever-specializing food chain. Navajo-Churro sheep, descended from the Spanish Churra brought to the American southwest by the Conquistadors, have been bred for centuries by the Navajo people. Berkshire and Tamworth hogs, Boer and San Clemente Island goats, and various breeds of heritage turkeys are also raised on the farm. The farm is known for its commitment to preserving these rare breeds and providing flavorful meat through humane care.

Practices

The farm employs sustainable farming practices, striving for balance and using natural ways of replenishing the land. Heritage breeds of poultry and livestock live in rotational pastures and paddocks, allowing them to exhibit their natural behaviors. The farm never uses chemicals, herbicides, or pesticides. Sheep and goats take care of weeds and provide natural fertilizer. Livestock Guardian Dogs and protective heritage turkeys help maintain a peaceful coexistence with wild predators. All animals are raised without growth hormones and antibiotics, except in rare cases where an antibiotic is necessary for an individual animal's health.

The Rest

The farm offers breeding stock, whole and half lambs, cuts of lamb, and wholesale sales throughout the year. Navajo-Churro sheep are listed on the Slow Food USA Ark of Taste and the American Livestock Breed's Conservation priority list. American rabbits, one of the rarest recognized breeds, are raised for dual meat and fur production. The farm also grows an heirloom variety of flint corn for hogs, and all hog feed is non-GMO. Purebred poults of heritage turkeys are sold in the spring. The farm emphasizes that flavorful meat comes from the breed, the feed, and humane care that allows animals to enjoy their natural behaviors and live happy lives.
