About the Farm
Background
Greg Swartz and Tannis Kowalchuk started the farm after Greg spent seven years apprenticing on local farms. In 2015, the farm moved to its current location along the Delaware River, allowing for a tripling in production. Greg, who has been farming in the Upper Delaware River Valley since 2000, aims to grow high-quality food and improve the farm ecosystem. Tannis leads cut flower production and manages social media, while also being the founding Artistic Director of Farm Arts Collective. The farm team includes long-time staffers like John Bachman, Joe Powell, Robert Eldred, and Bobby Skotch.
Practices
The farm uses cover crops, crop rotation, and creates insect and wildlife habitats to improve soil health and increase biodiversity. They avoid pesticides, herbicides, and synthetic fertilizers, and are Certified Organic by NOFA-NY Certified Organic, LLC. A 50.4 kW solar panel system installed in 2018 provides almost all of the farm's electricity needs. The farm emphasizes the importance of natural capitalism, aiming to protect and improve soil and water resources while producing food.
The Rest
The farm operates a CSA and sells at farmers markets, regional restaurants, stores, and institutions. Tannis also runs Farm Arts Collective, which offers public programs in theatre, agriculture, food, and ecology. The farm team is dedicated to creating a respectful workplace and training team members to be professionals in farming.
