About the Farm

Background

The journey began in 2010 with a small coop and a few chicks, evolving from a backyard hobby into a full-fledged farm by 2014. Initially starting on a four-acre plot, the farm expanded its livestock to include alpacas, ducks, turkeys, sheep, cows, rabbits, dogs, pigs, horses, and even a leopard gecko. By 2015, the farm began raising cattle, primarily Black Angus, and expanded to a 'big farm' 15 miles outside of Springfield. In 2017, the farm opened its first retail store and moved to the historic R. Bomke Homestead in Pleasant Plains, Illinois. The farm has continued to grow, adding more acreage, livestock, and even a solar-powered barn in 2023.

Practices

The farm employs permaculture and organic methods, emphasizing the interconnectedness of crops and livestock. Cattle are raised on lush pastures and fed high-quality grass and alfalfa, with grain finishing available upon customer request. The farm is licensed by the Illinois Department of Agriculture to process poultry, grade and sell eggs, and sell retail cuts of meat. The philosophy centers on sustainability, aiming to leave the soil, air, water, plant life, animals, and people healthier and happier.

The Rest

The farm offers tours of both its city and 'big' farm locations, encouraging visitors to see the operations firsthand. It participates in local farmers' markets and has a retail store in Springfield. Unique programs include the Test-A-Nest chicken rental and Goats + Yoga series. The farm also hosts events and parties at its venue, continuing the rich history of the Bomke Homestead. In 2018, the farm's owner won the Entrepreneur of the Year award from the Springfield Chamber of Commerce.
