About the Farm

Background

Wilderness Farms operates two farms located in Enumclaw, WA, and Bigfork, MT, specializing in purebred, heritage Berkshire hogs registered with the American Berkshire Association. The farm is known for its superior meat products and breeding stock, and has a strong commitment to supporting young people through local 4-H and FFA projects. The owners, Randy and Dawn Riviere, bring a combined 64 years of experience in food processing, food technology, and wildlife biology.

Practices

The farm raises Berkshires naturally outside in the open air, allowing them plenty of room to roam and express their individual personalities. The hogs are raised in small groups, primarily with individuals that grow up together, emphasizing their social nature. The farm feeds only locally raised grain and hay products, avoiding animal by-products, artificial hormones, and growth stimulants. The farming philosophy highlights respect for the animals and the land, with a focus on environmental stewardship.

The Rest

Wilderness Farms offers whole or half carcasses and other meat products, with breeding stock available at various times throughout the year. The farm's operations are split between breeding in Montana and raising feeder hogs in Washington for sale both locally and overseas. Randy Riviere, an award-winning wildlife biologist, also engages in a music project called Mad Buffalo.
