About the Farm

Background

Walking Cloud Ranch has been dedicated to raising Navajo-Churros, a breed known for its lean and tender meat as well as its long-staple wool, in the Horse Prairie Valley of southwestern Montana. Since November 2014, the ranch has offered Montana State Inspected butchering, allowing them to cater to specific harvesting methods including kosher and halaal.

Practices

The sheep at Walking Cloud Ranch are free range, grazing on a variety of native grasses, and their winter diet is supplemented with native grass hay grown on the ranch. The pastures are maintained without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, relying instead on natural fertilizers provided by the sheep. The sheep are never given antibiotics or growth hormones, and they experience minimal stress, contributing to the high quality of their meat and wool. The ranch also uses vegetal dyes made from native Montana plants and lichens to expand the natural color range of their wool.

The Rest

Walking Cloud Ranch offers organically, ethically, and sustainably raised lamb and wool, as well as starter flocks each year. The ranch welcomes visitors by appointment and provides free samples to those interested in purchasing meat or wool. Navajo-Churro meat is recommended by heart specialists for its lean quality, and the wool is highly favored by handspinners and weavers.
