About the Farm
Background
In 1982, Roy and Hope Brubaker began caring for the land that would become Village Acres Farm. Roy focused on growing crops for the Tuscarora Organic Growers Cooperative and CSA production, while Hope worked in the greenhouse and flower production. Angela established the farm’s CSA in 1998. Roy Dale introduced livestock to the farm, raising lamb, beef, and pork for the CSA at Blue Rooster Farm. In 2015, Roy and Hope transitioned the land to their children, and the farm business was taken over by Deb and her then spouse Hannah Smith-Brubaker. Today, Hope, Angela, Phoebe, and Deb all live and work on the farm.
Practices
Village Acres Farm operates as a diversified system, integrating organic vegetables, berries, flowers, and pastured livestock, including laying hens and sheep. The farm emphasizes organic certification and sustainable farming methods, focusing on building relationships that are sustaining, restorative, and transformative.
The Rest
The farm is located just off Route 322 near Mifflintown, about 50 minutes from State College and Harrisburg. The 45-acre farm is centered in the village of Cuba Mills, along the banks of the Lost Creek near its confluence with the Juniata River. Phoebe and Angie established Wilding Hope LLC, a cut flower business that shares the same land and infrastructure.
