About the Farm
Background
Upper Pond Farm is deeply invested in the Lyme - Old Lyme community, providing fresh produce through a Community Supported Agriculture membership program and donating to the Shore Line Soup Kitchen. The farm also offers opportunities for WWOOFers and interns to gain hands-on experience.
Practices
Upper Pond Farm employs ecologically based agricultural practices, focusing on improving soil health and structure, and enhancing biodiversity. The majority of work is done by human power, with tractors used only for tasks too large for manual labor, such as seasonal meadow mowing. The farm recycles nutrients through composting, reducing landfill waste and purchased inputs, and builds resilient systems. Preventative methods are used to create plant-positive environments, avoiding synthetic chemical treatments for disease and pests.
The Rest
Upper Pond Farm provides jobs and experience to people, fostering a connection with the earth and the food system. The farm's contributions to the local food system have been recognized in various articles.
