About the Farm
Background
Unity Church Hill Nursery began its journey with a commitment to community, inspiration, and education. Since its inception, it has become known for its extensive array of pottery fountains, organic plant and vegetable care products, compost, mulch, gravel, stone, sand, and garden art. The nursery prides itself on selecting products based on sustainability, affordability, durability, and beauty, with a preference for items made in the USA. In 2016, the nursery expanded its operations to include food production, focusing on bio-intensive growing methods to produce nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables.
Practices
The nursery employs bio-intensive growing methods, ensuring that no chemicals are used on their 44-acre farm. Emphasizing soil building and balancing, crops are sited in appropriate locations, and various permaculture techniques are integrated into their farming practices. This approach results in high-quality vegetables that are available to the public six days a week. The farm also features demonstration gardens, hugel mounds, a sacred geometry garden, and terraces.
The Rest
Visitors are welcome to explore the fields in production and the various gardens. The nursery also participates in the Chestertown Farmers Market on Saturday mornings. The retail nursery offers a year-round selection of native trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals, including large specimen trees from both above-ground inventory and field production.
