About the Farm
Background
Titus Farms was established in 1982 by Paul and Rose Titus on a 20-acre parcel in Dansville, Michigan. Both Paul and Rose grew up on family farms, and after marrying, they started their own farm using organic methods due to Rose's chemical sensitivities. The farm initially focused on traditional field crops but shifted to vegetables and cut flowers as demand grew. Their daughter, Rebecca, started a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program in 2007 while studying at Michigan State University, which has since expanded significantly.
Practices
The farm employs organically-inspired methods, including the use of compost and natural fertilizers to maintain soil health. Hoeing and hand-weeding are preferred over herbicides, and the farm tends to bees and preserves the natural habitat to support a healthy ecosystem. While not certified organic, the farm uses OMRI-approved products when necessary, ensuring they are not petroleum-based and are applied carefully. The farm's philosophy emphasizes taste and sustainability, aiming to reduce the time between harvest and consumption and using unique vegetable varieties to preserve lost flavors.
The Rest
Titus Farms occupies the ancestral lands of the Anishinaabeg – Three Fires Confederacy of Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi peoples. The farm is known for its CSA program, which has grown from 50 members in its first year to 300 families by 2009. The farm also expanded its reach during the pandemic by venturing into home delivery. The farm family includes Rebecca Titus, Justin Hoffman, Paul Titus, Rose Titus, and several beloved farm animals.
