About the Farm
Background
Tide Mill Farm has been in the Bell Family since 1765. For over 200 years, the family has dedicated their lives to producing healthy food. Today, members of the 7th, 8th, and 9th generation work together every day to raise and provide the healthiest, humanly raised organic food. Located on the northeastern most coast of Maine, the farm's livestock enjoy foggy mornings in seaside pastures with farmers who prioritize quality of life and certified organic practices.
Practices
The farm believes in certified organic methods of care and attention when raising their mixed vegetables, herbs, small fruits, and livestock. Crops are raised on 4 acres of crop land, while a milking herd of 60 cows are rotationally grazed on 40 acres of pasture during the growing season and fed baleage, hay, and certified organic grains. The farm proudly feeds organic grain from Maine Organic Milling. Additionally, 30 pigs are engaged in clearing fields for upcoming pasture, and 10,000 meat birds are raised, harvested, and packaged each year within a carefully managed grass-based system. The integration of organic livestock with the whole farm system plays a key role in maintaining the health of the family farm.
The Rest
The farm markets its food directly to consumers through farmers markets, farm stands, personalized delivery routes, CSA, and the Senior FarmShare program. Products are also sold to health food stores and restaurants across Maine, with statewide distribution by Crown of Maine Organic Cooperative. Connecting people to their food is an integral part of the farm's mission.
