About the Farm
Background
Three Brothers Farm has been in the family since 1944, with the land being owned by the family since 1890. Initially focused on sugarcane, the farm expanded into fig preserves in 1997, selling at the Crescent City Farmers Market. Hurricane Rita in 2005 significantly impacted fig production, leading the farm to focus on raw sugar production. Today, the farm is run by Bob and Chris Romero, continuing the family tradition of supplying pure Louisiana sugar and cane syrup to various establishments.
Practices
The farm's sugarcane is cut and hauled to a grinding mill during harvest. After milling, the raw sugar is returned to the farm's FDA-approved kitchen for cleaning, grading, and packaging, without any refining. The raw sugar comes from the first crystallization at the mill and is never bleached with bone char, making it a rare vegan-friendly sweetener. The farm's syrup is 100% pure, with zero preservatives and none of the bitter aftertastes found in some syrups.
The Rest
Three Brothers Farm supplies raw sugar to several well-known restaurants and food co-ops in New Orleans. Their products are available in commercial quantities through Inland Distributing and can be found at NOLA Food Co-Op, Rouses Markets, and select Whole Foods stores. The farm also sells directly to customers. Future plans include producing natural molasses, raw simple syrup for beverages, and raw sugar cubes.
