About the Farm
Background
Manoah and Martha Steves settled and began farming in the southwest corner of Lulu Island, now Richmond, BC, in 1877. The farm has been passed down through generations and is currently owned and operated by Harold and Kathy Steves with help from their sons.
Practices
The farm raises natural, 100% grass-fed beef from two family-run operations in Steveston and Back Valley Ranch near Cache Creek, BC. None of the animals receive growth hormones or antibiotics, and the cattle are treated with respect, avoiding the use of yelling, electric prods, or stock dogs. Belted Galloway cattle graze on grass pasture in Steveston and are fattened on alfalfa during the winter from the Cache Creek ranch.
The Rest
The farm sells natural beef and eggs year-round, along with various produce and seeds seasonally, including their popular Alpha Tomatoes. Partner sites include Back Valley Ranch, EatWild.com, Garden City Lands Coalition, Grass Fed Cooking, Seeds of Diversity, and Seedsavers Exchange.
