About the Farm

Background

The Smithshyre began as a poultry farm and has since expanded to include goats, sheep, and a variety of heirloom crops. Disenfranchised by the current food system, the founders transitioned from a mostly vegan diet to raising their own chickens, turkeys, and vegetables. Their mission is to produce clean, natural food without seeking organic certification, and they have become known for their heritage breeds and agritourism offerings.

Practices

The Smithshyre adheres to 'actually organic' principles, avoiding chemicals and altered seeds. They grow all crops from organic seed and make their own compost, using OMRI certified inputs as needed. Livestock, including heritage poultry and Finnish Landrace sheep, are rotated through pastures and orchards to promote land health and animal well-being. Birds are fed high-quality, local, certified organic, and GMO-free feed, and all animals have access to open pasture. The farm also practices permaculture, continuously converting the property into a permaculture forest with rows of fruit trees and berry patches.

The Rest

The Smithshyre offers various agritourism activities such as farm tours, baby goat yoga, and kiddie playtime sessions. They sell goats for pets or breeders, not for meat, and offer organic goat milk soap and raw fleece from their sheep. The farm stand operates seasonally, and products are available year-round through Kitsap Fresh. The farm is mostly closed from mid-October to late March.
