About the Farm
Background
The farm began its journey in 2008, cultivating produce in five small garden sites located in private yards in Needham, MA. Inspired by the victory gardens of WWII, the founders aimed to bring a new 'farm' to the suburbs. Over the years, they rented and borrowed land across Eastern Massachusetts, facing challenges such as development encroachment and the need for more stable land. In 2017, they found a long-term home at Mainstone Farm in Wayland, where they grew for five years before moving their entire operation to Westport in 2023.
Practices
The farm grows naturally without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers, and never uses GMO seeds. They test the soil before planting to ensure it is healthy and uncontaminated, striving to develop sustainable, low-input systems for all operations. Although they have not applied for organic certification due to the complexities of changing sites, they maintain an 'all-natural' approach to farming.
The Rest
The farm offers a variety of purchasing options, including seasonal and year-round farmers markets, and pre-orders from their Online Farmstand. They have pick-up locations throughout metro Boston and along the South Coast. They also host an annual seedling sale featuring hundreds of varieties of plant starts. The farm is managed by Kate and Jude, who are passionate about heirloom tomatoes, garlic, and hot peppers, supported by a dedicated crew of farmers.
