About the Farm
Background
Visitors to the scenic overlook at John Boyd Thacher State Park can spot the historic Dutch barn, part of the original Fryer Farm dating back to circa 1730. The Fryer family, early settlers in the capital district region of New York, transitioned their farm from a diverse self-sustaining operation to a fruit orchard and eventually to milk production. In the early 1990s, the remaining lands were subdivided and sold. Decades later, a portion of the original estate was revived as Black Creek Farm, producing maple syrup and fresh fruits and vegetables.
Practices
The farm uses only fertilizers and pesticides approved for organic use and adheres to the 'Farmers Pledge' recognized by the Northeast Organic Farming Association of NY. This commitment ensures that sustainable practices are at the forefront of their farming methods.
The Rest
Members of the CSA pick up their shares at the farm, usually on Wednesday afternoons, from June into October. Full shares are priced at $450, while personal/medium shares are available for $300. Members who volunteer to work on the farm for six hours or more during the season receive a $25 rebate. The farm also hosted 'Meadowdale Winery,' a New York State Farm Winery.
