About the Farm
Background
Nick and Jenny, first-generation farmers, grew up in farming country in north central Iowa but did not live on farms. After spending a decade in Kansas City working in public safety and auditing, they moved to a twelve-acre parcel south of Spring Hill, Kansas, along Ten Mile Creek in 2015. Inspired by Joel Salatin and other farming legends, they adopted principles that contrast conventional agriculture, focusing on soil health and diverse, regenerative farming practices.
Practices
The farm's approach centers on soil health, avoiding synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides. They emphasize diversity, modeling their farm after natural ecosystems with a variety of livestock including Scottish Highland cattle, St. Croix sheep, Blue Butt Cross Hogs, Cornish-cross meat chickens, and various egg-laying hens. Livestock are raised on grass, moved daily, and never confined to feedlots. Adaptability is key, with practices adjusting to changing weather, soil conditions, and animal health. The cows and sheep graze on grasses, legumes, and forbs, while chickens follow to distribute manure and control flies.
