About the Farm

Background

In 1918, Marion Rufus Struble purchased the ranch, originally named Alta Vista, from Dick Cook. The farm was passed down through generations, with Harold Struble planting the first Owari Satsuma Mandarins in 1956. The farm has remained in the Struble family, expanding its citrus groves and continuing the tradition of mandarin cultivation through four generations.

Practices

The Struble Ranch employs pesticide-free farming methods, using natural supplements like Zinc, Magnesium, and Iron to nourish the trees. A balanced fertilizer is applied in late February to stimulate new growth. The farm's irrigation follows a 12-day rotation cycle during summer. To enhance the sweetness of the fruit, harvested mandarins are allowed to rest for a few days, converting starches to sugar before sale.

The Rest

The farm features 330 citrus trees planted on a southern slope to optimize sunlight and reduce frost risk. The trees are grafted to Cleopatra root stock for hardiness. The ranch also showcases barn quilts, with the first one painted by Jan Struble in 2012. The Loomis Basin Barn Quilt Committee, organized by Jan, has created a Barn Quilt Trail Map available at the ranch. Jan’s Jams are a popular product, and the farm is a cherished local landmark.
