About the Farm
Background
Located in the heart of New England's Merrimac Valley, the farm is known for its beautiful apple orchards and picturesque farmscape. The land, carved by glaciers and settled by prehistoric Indian tribes, was colonized by English settlers and later farmed by European immigrants. Parts of the historic homestead are about 300 years old. In 1982, the family preserved 107 of the 160 acres in cooperation with the State of Massachusetts Agricultural Preservation Restriction Program, ensuring the land would remain open and undeveloped. Over the past 35 years, H. Michael Smolak has transformed the farm from a dairy operation into a multifaceted agricultural and entertainment venue.
Practices
The farm employs a variety of agricultural practices, including growing farm-fresh fruit, berries, and vegetables. The wood used in the farm's buildings comes from trees on the property, milled locally. The farm stand, originally a chicken coop, now serves as a hub for fresh produce and baked goods, including their famous cider donuts. The greenhouse, built in 1992, extends the growing season and provides a relaxing space for visitors.
The Rest
Visitors can enjoy a range of activities, from picking fruit in the orchards to educational hayrides and summer programs for children. The farm hosts festivals and events throughout the year, attracting families from metropolitan Boston and beyond. The pine grove area and Orchard Hill site are popular for functions. The farm stand and bakery offer a variety of fresh baked goods, ice cream, and sandwiches. Special events like the Whim Dinner Series feature farm-to-table meals crafted by top chefs from New England.
