About the Farm
Background
Started in 1990 by Carl and Deb Smits, this family-owned business has grown from a single greenhouse to fifteen over the past thirty years. Initially a small operation, it has expanded significantly, now involving a family of eleven and multiple locations, including a second farmstand and participation in numerous Farmers Markets in Chicago.
Practices
As of August 2009, the farm became Food Alliance Certified, ensuring that their farming practices support safe and fair working conditions, humane treatment of animals, and good environmental stewardship. This certification underscores their commitment to producing and processing food in a sustainable and safe manner.
The Rest
Visitors can find their products at the main location on Sauk Trail, a second farmstand at Steger and 394, or at various Farmers Markets in Chicago. The farm is open for the season, offering a wide range of annuals, perennials, herbs, and vegetables.
