About the Farm

Background

The origin of the cattle on Sitkinak Island dates back to 1937 when the first beef cattle were introduced. These cattle have adapted to the lush coastal environment of the island, thriving in the natural grazing conditions. For 70 years, the cattle roamed wild until they began receiving care for the first time in history. The Mudd family, originally from Lost River Valley, Idaho, took on the challenge of managing the ranch together, transitioning into the Kodiak and Alaska community.

Practices

Cattle on Sitkinak Island graze freely year-round on lush hills and beaches, without the need for grain, hay, or confinement. They are not given vaccines, antibiotics, steroids, or other additives, ensuring they remain 100% grass-fed and Certified Naturally Grown. The cattle are minimally handled, not branded, and are locally harvested using a mobile processing unit to avoid undue stress. These practices result in beef that is lower in fat, higher in omega-3s, beta-carotene, and essential vitamins and minerals.

The Rest

The beef from Sitkinak Island is available fully cooked, packaged to eliminate the need for freezers and refrigerators, promoting energy savings. The Mudd family emphasizes building and maintaining trust with their customers, offering personal care from the ranch to the plate. The recognized health benefits of their grass-fed beef include reduced risks of heart disease, depression, and certain cancers, making it a superior product for health-conscious consumers.
