About the Farm
Background
The Shirley Family Farm, spanning 120 acres in north-central Kentucky, has been in the Shirley family since its purchase in 1903. Currently owned and operated by Tony and Debi Shirley, the farm benefits from Tony's extensive background in agriculture education and extension services, and Debi's passion for animals and gardening.
Practices
The farm focuses on producing quality cross-bred breeding stock for the commercial goat industry, specifically Kiko and Kiko-Savanna crosses known for their maternal instincts, disease resistance, and quality meat production. The goats are primarily forage-based with minimal grain supplementation, and are given a free-choice veterinary-developed mineral blend. Rotational grazing is employed to control parasites and ensure fresh forage, while proper vaccination schedules are maintained without the use of hormones. Sustainable practices include the use of legumes to improve pasture quality, cover crops to prevent soil erosion, and soil test-based fertilization to maintain land quality for future generations.
The Rest
The farm offers various goats for sale, including Kiko bucks and does, both registered and unregistered, with detailed pricing and genetic information available. Additionally, the farm welcomed a prestigious New Zealand Kiko buck, 'Blue,' in Spring 2023, who is expected to contribute significantly to the herd's genetics.
