About the Farm
Background
Antonio and Molly Manzanares's family ranch in the Tierra Amarilla area originally belonged to Antonio's grandfather, Carlos, who ran his own band of sheep. The land was leased to local ranchers before Antonio and Molly began working it. Starting with a flock of only 30 ewes, they built up their herd into a thriving business with around 1000 ewes, supplying high-quality organic lamb to local communities. Their business has expanded to include organic meat, pelts, yarns, wool, and high-quality blankets.
Practices
The flock grazes all summer on lush native mountain grasses and shrubs, with the shepherd's camp moved weekly to ensure fresh feed and long-term range health. The lambs are never in a feedlot, allowing them to eat fresh feed and get plenty of exercise, contributing to their delicate taste. The ranch maintains control from raising the lambs to marketing them, ensuring high quality.
The Rest
Shepherd's Lamb can be purchased by mail-order online and at Farmers' Markets in Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Taos, and Albuquerque, NM, as well as in restaurants and natural food stores in those cities. The ranch also produces organic heirloom blankets, lamb pelts, and yarns.
