About the Farm
Background
Schlechter Farms traces its roots back to the early 1900s when Joseph Schlechter settled in the Willamette Valley. Jim Schlechter began farming in 1971 with wheat and clover seed, transitioning in 1978 to sweet corn and onions. Over the years, the farm has expanded its crop rotation to include winter squash, grass for seed, broccoli, and various vegetables. The farm has been selling produce to northwest grocers and at their own seasonal stand since the early 1980s.
Practices
Schlechter Farms employs crop rotation, planting corn on different fields each year, including the renowned Lake Labish area for onions. They use a Monosem 8-row planter and irrigate regularly during dry months to ensure their crops thrive. The farm adheres to the USDA's 'Good Agricultural Practices' program, ensuring strict guidelines for planting, harvesting, packing, cooling, and storage. They use a Pixall single-row tractor-pulled corn harvester and a hydro-cooler to maintain the sweetness and quality of their corn. Importantly, they do not plant GMO corn.
The Rest
Schlechter Farms offers online ordering with curbside pickup for their produce. They accept various forms of payment, including cash, checks, debit, major credit cards, Apple Pay, FDNP vouchers, and EBT cards for SNAP-approved purchases. The farm's produce stand operates from early August through late October, featuring a wide variety of vegetables and freshly-picked peaches from their small orchard.
