About the Farm
Background
Located in the northern Appalachian mountains of Somerset County, Pennsylvania, Savage Mountain Farm has established itself as a cornerstone of the local agricultural community. Known for its wide array of offerings, the farm operates a 160-member cooperative that allows members to select from a diverse range of produce, meats, and other farm products. The farm also maintains a strong presence at local farmers markets and supplies many restaurants in the area.
Practices
Savage Mountain Farm adheres to natural farming methods, raising beef, pork, chicken, turkey, rabbit, and lamb on pasture. The farm grows its own animal feed, including corn, oats, and hay, without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, growth hormones, or unnecessary antibiotics. The produce and mushrooms are cultivated without synthetic, inorganic fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. Animals are allowed to express their true nature outdoors and are provided with high-quality, minimally-processed feed, including forage, garden veggies, whey, and homegrown grains and hay.
The Rest
The farm's cooperative philosophy emphasizes 'free choice' and 'rolling credit,' allowing members maximum flexibility and value. Members can pick up their shares weekly or opt for home delivery. The farm also offers internships and low-income work-share options, ensuring that quality, healthy food is accessible to all. Additionally, Savage Mountain Farm participates in four farmers markets weekly and provides various membership levels to suit different needs.
