About the Farm
Background
In 1979, Jim and Adele Hayes moved their family to a defunct dairy farm, Sap Bush Hollow, and began restoring the pastures by grazing sheep. Over the years, they diversified to include pasture-raised chicken, turkeys, eggs, pork, and grass-fed beef. The farm now also offers vacation rentals and a weekly farm-to-table cafe. Their efforts have led Sap Bush Hollow to be recognized as one of USDA/SARE’s most innovative farms in the country.
Practices
The farm employs rotational grazing and sustainable agriculture practices, ensuring that their resident plant and animal life mutually benefit from their efforts. All products are free of hormones and antibiotics, and the animals are raised under natural conditions. The chickens are always outside with other animals, contributing to the health of the pastures.
The Rest
Sap Bush Hollow Farm offers a variety of purchasing options, including an online store, an honor system farm store, and a presence at Barbers’ farm stand. The Sap Bush Cafe, open every Saturday, provides farm-to-table meals and an espresso bar. The farm also ships products to private buying clubs in New Jersey and New York. The family members each play a significant role in the farm's operations, from managing livestock to running the cafe and retail operations.
