About the Farm
Background
The journey began with an inspiration from Wendell Berry's book 'The Unsettling of American Culture and Agriculture' during college. This led to meeting Virginia Jeavons and learning about John Jeavons' 'How to Grow More Vegetables' and the Seed Savers Exchange. The first practical experience with CSA was at Common Ground Farm in Olympia, where the founder cultivated heirloom beans, corn, and tomatoes. The farm has grown with the support of volunteers and subscribers, and the family has been deeply involved in its operations.
Practices
The farm employs bio-intensive methods, starting with double digging and transforming spaces into productive gardens. The philosophy emphasizes organic soil management and permaculture practices to sequester greenhouse gases and reduce emissions. The interconnectedness of farming practices, ecology, and human health is central to their approach, focusing on creating a sustainable and re-localized food system.
The Rest
The farm's narrative includes personal stories, such as Hanna's artistic talents and Lee's dedication as an RN and her multifaceted role on the farm. The farm also advocates for bold action against climate change, emphasizing the role of organic agriculture in mitigating global warming. They stress the importance of educating the public about the impact of industrial food systems on the environment and the need for a transition to sustainable farming practices.
