About the Farm
Background
Russell Orchards, a 120-acre fruit farm in Ipswich, MA, has been family-owned and operated for two generations. Doug and Miranda Russell took ownership in 2008, continuing the legacy started by Doug's father, Max, who farmed the land for 30 years. Doug began working on the farm right out of high school in 1979, learning essential skills from experienced farmers. After a successful career in software, Doug returned to farming full-time. Miranda joined the orchard in 1992, initially working as a cashier and pie maker.
Practices
The farm employs Integrated Pest Management (IPM) methods, using minimal synthetic chemicals to address the most severe pests. This scientific approach involves monitoring fruit growth stages for signs of disease or pest damage and applying targeted pesticides or fungicides as needed. Detailed records of all applications are maintained by a licensed pesticide applicator and can be verified by the EPA.
The Rest
Visitors can enjoy a variety of products including apples, fruits, vegetables, bakery items, wines, honey, and eggs. The farm offers pick-your-own fruit options and serves homemade berry shortcakes. The store features freshly baked goods, local honey, and unique fruit wines made from the farm's produce.
