About the Farm
Background
Robert and Margaret Moschini began farming in 1975 on a rented farm in Grafton, MA, initially milking 60 cows. In 1982, they purchased a farm in Spencer, MA, from Larry and Barbara Taylor, continuing its dairy operations until 2004. The farm, now known as Royal Crest Farm, LLC, evolved under the management of their son Anthony, who graduated from Cornell University in 2009 with a degree in Agriculture Science. The farm expanded its production and sales, maintaining its family-run tradition.
Practices
The farm spans 365 acres, with 55 acres of tillable land, 13 acres of pasture, and the remainder being mostly woodlands. They grow hay on 550 acres of cropland throughout Worcester County, MA, which is sold to horse and cow customers and fed to their own beef herd. The livestock, including 150 head of beef, 12 pigs, 120 chickens, and 50 turkeys, are fed a total mixed ration of haylage and corn silage, both grown on the farm. As a certified composting site, the farm produces about 3,000 yards of compost annually by blending goat, horse, and cow manure with hay and wood shavings, a process that takes at least six months.
The Rest
The farm operates an established retail FarmStore and supplies local grocery establishments and restaurants. They offer a variety of products, including landscaping supplies, hay, all-natural beef, and other farm-raised meats. The compost is sold by the yard or bag for vegetable and flower gardens, and some is sold wholesale in bulk to landscapers, garden centers, and the Tower Hill Botanical Society.
