About the Farm
Background
The farm began as a dream in self-sufficiency and has grown to include a 36' hoop house for tomatoes and peppers, raised beds for various vegetables, and several hives for honey production. Initially sharing produce with neighbors, the farm now participates in two farmers markets on Whidbey Island.
Practices
The farm employs free-range methods for their chickens and ducks, resulting in eggs with higher nutritional value and distinct orange yolks. Narragansett turkeys, a heritage breed, are raised for their tender meat. Freedom Ranger chickens are chosen for their balanced growth, avoiding joint issues, and are integrated with the layer hens for free-ranging. Berkshire hogs are started on concrete and quickly moved to grassy areas. All animals are raised without hormones or unnecessary antibiotics. The vegetable garden includes a variety of crops, and the farm maintains several beehives, producing honey without the use of synthetic chemicals.
The Rest
The farm's tomatoes and peppers contributed to a winning salsa in a local contest. They sell hardy plants from their flower beds, and their honey is available both on the farm and at local farmers markets. They are active members of the Skagit Valley Beekeepers club and welcome visitors who are interested in learning about beekeeping. The farm participates in the Oak Harbor Market on Thursdays and the Coupeville Market on Saturdays.
