About the Farm
Background
Located in the Tallac Village neighborhood of Sacramento, this 1-acre urban farmstead is dedicated to providing fresh produce to its local community.
Practices
The farm employs a variety of ecological methods to maintain soil health and support a vibrant ecosystem. These practices include avoiding chemical applications by using OMRI listed compost, animal manures, and Diatomaceous Earth for pest control. Soil preparation is done with a small walk-behind tractor and tarps, while weed control is managed manually with hoes and other hand tools. The farm also practices minimal tillage, cover cropping, crop rotation, interplanting, straw mulching, and uses shade cloth for season extension. Drip irrigation is utilized for efficient water use, and native and insectary plantings are incorporated to support beneficial insects.
The Rest
The farm offers a seasonal array of fresh market vegetables and fruits, including tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, salad greens, lettuce, okra, strawberries, onions, sweet potatoes, radishes, herbs, garlic, eggplant, peppers, and green beans.
