About the Farm
Background
Located at Amethyst Farm in Amherst, Massachusetts, this small, community-supported farm has become known for its commitment to producing high-quality organic vegetables, flowers, and herbs. The farm aims to be a model of sustainable and ethical agriculture, delivering fresh produce at an affordable price to the local community.
Practices
The farm's agricultural practices revolve around the permanent bed system, which maximizes soil fertility and structure while minimizing soil degradation. Intensive planting in a small area, reliance on hand tools and human power, and the use of season extension techniques are key components of their approach. Although not certified organic, all crops are grown in strict adherence to USDA National Organic Program standards, using only OMRI-approved products.
The Rest
The farm offers a CSA program with shares available for pickup from May 30 to November 23, 2024. Members have access to a Pick-Your-Own garden featuring a variety of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers. Clear signage and tools are provided to assist members in harvesting. The farm emphasizes a healthy work environment for employees and a positive, supportive culture. Visitors are encouraged to supervise children closely and refrain from bringing pets, except for disability assistance animals.
